One of the newest restaurants to open on the scene in Shanghai may not yet have its Michelin stars, but is quickly earning a reputation for its fantastic service. The dining experience at KTK Restaurant goes beyond the delicious multiple-course lunch, and patrons should be prepared to also be delighted with performances ranging from ballet to piano, from violin to song. Seating is limited and reservations required at KTK, but those that do get a table are undoubtedly in for a treat.

However, in efforts to provide a fully transparent review and critique, it is also worth noting that the actual chairs in KTK Restaurant are quite small. For that matter… so is the staff. In fact, if one could rise out of the remarkable dining experience and look past the open-plan kitchen, stage, and freshly painted signage, one might realize that the theme behind the theme of this new establishment could feel, well, just a little bit Kindergarten.

Visioning for the restaurant began way back in February of 2019 when, after months of playing pretend restaurant with their Play-Doh, a boy named Jonny passionately asked if they could open a real restaurant. Very quickly, the whole class was onboard.

Our Early Childhood program at SAS revolves around pure inquiry projects like this, with learning that stems from the students’ ideas and interests. Time and autonomy are essential for authentic learning like this to surface, learning where teachers become facilitators and students become whatever they want to be. From there, subjects like math and literacy are interwoven, as are skills like collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving.

The Kindergarten class was soon chatting with real chefs, taking a field trip to a local steakhouse to learn about all the different roles, and spending hours diligently preparing and practicing. A key part of this journey was learning to work as a fully equal team. While each student focused on mastering their roles and responsibilities, they were learning on a deeper level that each role was equally important, and that they were all part of a bigger whole. After a soft opening with customers from 4th grade, KTK Restaurant opened for lunch hours on three different days to our community. The level of professionalism went beyond our wildest expectations, and while we all may be a little biased, we’ve only heard rave reviews.

And the young restauranteurs? Happy. Happy they were able to feed people. Happy they earned real money. Proud they faced their fears and worked as a team. And… now saying they’d like to open an ice cream shop, a bug shop, or a candy shop…

Will the restaurant continue next year, beyond this class of ’31? Much like when the Kindergarten hosted their own Olympics a couple years ago, their teacher Mr. King would reply, “It depends on if the kids are into it.” Our teachers are always adapting and responding to student interest, ever-investing in whatever will inspire a lifelong learner.
FUN. EVERY DAY AT SAS.
