CO2?+ H2O???? H2CO3
H2CO3???? HCO3–?+ H+

Hydrogen carbonate ions form inside red blood cells before diffusing into the blood plasma
Explain the role of diffusion in the transport of carbon dioxide from respiring cells.
Carbon dioxide diffuses down a concentration gradient from respiring cells into the plasma
Some carbon dioxide diffuses into red blood cells to combine with haemoglobin, forming carbaminohaemoglobin
After diffusing into red blood cells some carbon dioxide combines with water to form carbonic acid, which dissociates to form hydrogen carbonate ions and hydrogen ions; the hydrogen carbonate ions diffuse out of the red blood cells into the plasma
From the capillaries in the lungs carbon dioxide diffuses out of the plasma and red blood cells into the alveoli
