On Friday afternoon, November 15, Ms. Zhou came to school to attend the Parent Teacher Conference. Her daughter, a seventh-grade student, has just transferred to THIS this semester. “I made appointment with every single teacher who teaches my daughter, and I am curious about her performance at school.” Ms. Zhou said. And she was not alone. Many parents came for the same reason as THIS hosted that annual Parent Teacher Conferences.
On November 15 and 16, staff from THIS were prepared to meet parents and talk about individual student progress. Parents used the PowerSchool System to schedule meetings in advance. The one-to-one meeting was meant to allow all parents and teachers time to discuss the most concerning academic issues.
Teachers gave feedback on anything from curriculum content, students’ academic performance, class participation to assignments and evaluations. But the discussion did not only revolve around test scores. Teachers also addressed the students attitudes and behaviors; their willingness to participate and engage in their learning.
Director of College Counseling Ms. Ming Rong Weng and College Counselor Ms. Amy Zou presented university admission workshops for grade 9 and grade 10 parents. Ms. Weng and Ms. Zou elaborated on the preparations for applying to different countries and how to better select course and plan extracurricular activities.
At the conclusion of the day Ms Zhou had this to say about the days’ events:“PTC is perfect. My daughter used to study at public schools. Parents can only be allowed to sit in the classroom and listen to the teachers. They need to use other means, such as calling teachers if they want to know more about their children’s performance. Teachers from THIS are all familiar with their students and the one-to-one meeting can give us a comprehensive understanding of our children’s performance at school.”
The success of Parent Teacher Conferences is a tribute to the conscientious staff, the hard-working support staff, the willingness and openness of the parent community and to the hard work of all our students. We have a continued hope that THIS and parents will work together to enhance the growth of the children and the broader THIS family!
