Today marks the 107thanniversary that SAS first opened our doors to 38 students in 1912. We’ve celebrated some of the school’s past legends during Founders Week 2019.
Today, we celebrate a legend from the present.
It was Saturday, August 10, 2019, and Typhoon Lekima was pounding Shanghai with strong winds and sheets of rain. With the start of the 2019-20 school year just days away, faculty and students were finishing up preparations to welcome new families to SAS.
At 2pm, everyone gathered their raincoats and umbrellas and headed out through the storm to go home. What no one realized at the time is, the typhoon was no longer just outside. Because in the middle school music rooms, rain water was pouring in from doors and walls and even coming through drains. The water level was just about to reach the cardboard boxes piled high with sheet music for the new year, when SAS middle school Assistant Principal John Ashenden walked by.
Quickly alternating between panicked calls to security and grabbing all the sheet music boxes and instruments he could, John carried each and every one of the music supplies to safety. Thus began a clean-up process that carried on until past midnight. John is quick to credit all the help he received – from the security team, facilities team, and even Tommy’s Guys, the men in the ubiquitous green uniforms. As for us? We are quick to credit John’s fast-acting response – something we’ll be reminded of every time we hear our students play a pitch-perfect note this year.
GRATITUDE. EVERY DAY AT SAS.
