To the Class of 2019,
You lot. How do I even begin to describe the tall, foreboding class that is the senior class? Much as you guys undoubtedly observe us feral freshmen with a gaze reserved for the extraterrestrial, we also view you seniors with a particular eye. The attempt to understand each other before the end of the year goes both ways.
The gap between a mere four years is one between the club executive member and the newcomer, the team captain and the benchwarmer, the section leader and the fourth-row, partner-B page-turner. To us, you have extended, perhaps unknowingly, a bridge of mentorship and guidance. And to you, we wish to extend a bridge of our gratitude.
I think this first experience of losing our seniors to graduation will hit the hardest for us. For so many of my friends, you are the older brothers and sisters that have always been nearby, separated by no more than a hallway or building or two. And for the only-children like me, you are the cooler versions of our friends we’ve come to know since playdates from the fourth grade.
Call it the teenage stereotype, but you never stay for long, do you? Now that we’ve finally clambered up to the bottom rung of high school, you sink deeper into your studies and prepare for life in another country by June. Before you go, let this letter be a final word from freshmen to you.
To the fierce, potentially radioactive athletes, the star older-brother and -sister figures of our teams: your diligence, grit, and your patience each time you walk us through the stretches, warm-ups, and cheers inspire us more than you can know.
To the musicians and artists and dancers with hearts of gold: thank you for being our creative inspiration. You are the older nerds we can geek out with concerning Shostakovich, and acrylics versus watercolour, and the many ways we can stand and spin on our heads on the dance floor. You are the comedians in the pit band, the starring actors in musicals even our parents gawk about, the dance performances that are justthat much cooler, the exhibition works we cannot help but take a second look at, admiration rooting us to the ground. For your dedication to the arts, it is to you whom we thank as we try even harder for AMIS and APACs and summer camp auditions.
To the Secretaries General and student officers for me, and the countless other club leaders for other freshmen: thank you for showing us leadership, and a passion to learn and teach others. The wisdom and sarcastic wit you so generously give have motivated many of us to work hard and repel arrogance from our heads. We pursue so many areas of academic discipline after seeing what you guys are capable of. You are the writers and speakers that have shaped my own voice, the mathematicians and humanitarians that have shaped the ambitions of countless others.
We will miss you. And we wish you all the best of luck. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Sincerely,Michelle Huang, Class of 2022.
