Jason Hunt
Good morning, Jason. And nice to have an interview with you today. Lets go back to your college life, first question is what's your major in university where you graduate from?
My major is a first class honors in a computer systems engineering.?I went to La Trobe University?in Melbourne. And the reason I chose that university was at the time that was the first university to offer that type of course and certainly focus on artificial intelligence.
So after you graduated, I saw your resume, you are working in the IT industry for a while. Why you decided to transfer your career into a teacher?
That's a good question. I'll answer that probably in two points. Um, when I was working in Korea, I was working in a lot of industries because I was a consultant. So I got to move in lots of companies and to be honest, a lot of my jobs I really liked in the IT industry was replacing people with computers and this was very different to my father. My father was a teacher. I actually had my father as my teacher at school. So there are two things I decided that I wanted to give back to people. I didn't want to be in a job where I'm replacing people with computers. I wanted to be in a job where I'm actually helping people. I've done training in computers before. And I thought talking to my father going into teaching year. Good thing to do.
Fantastic. Sounds like it's a family heritage. When you decide to transfer your career into a teacher, where you started?
I started in Tokyo, in Japan, and I worked for an English company there. And eventually I decided to branch out and create my own English teaching company. Um, and then I built that up and eventually employed five other teachers, expand that business over five years to teach ?students and adults in? various areas in Tokyo.
Why you choose Kunming?
Some of my friends had been to Kunming just traveling. And they mentioned it's the, you know the spring city and it's up in the mountains and blue skies. And I was sitting in Hangzhou looking at the sky going, this isn't blue. And I thought, I want to move somewhere where it's a better environment. As soon as I came down to visit Kunming, I realized this is where I want to be. And I've been here for, I think, nearly eight years.
Wow, eight years, such a long time.can you describe the job environment, is there anything you want the school to improve or you can help the school improve?
Jason:?
I've?taught?a few things here at number three. Um, and I've?been teaching uh, helping with the keystone program and helping students go through that. Um, I helped introduce the idea of a computer course because with my background in computers, I think it's very important nowadays, the key to learning computers. Um, next year I'll?be moving into or next school year, I'll?be moving into uh, teaching the I fly program in doing mathematics, uh, because I've?done many years of teaching mathematics.
Um, and I think in answer to how the school is, um, I've?worked in other Chinese?schools, as I've?mentioned, and some of them are. Let's just say not so caring of the student. Um, and I would say number three really provides uh, a caring and supportive environment for the students. Um, and this is certainly a school that pays a lot of attention to what the students want. And will help them uh, choose different paths of where they want to go with their university studies.
I know I've?worked in a competing school in this city, which I won't say the name, but I know at that school, It's?very much focusing lots of students to the same style of study. Um, and?I'm?pleased to say that, you know, number threes a lot more supportive of students who don't want to follow the normal path, especially, uh, students who, you know, don't just want to study the sciences. Um, we've got a lot of support for students who want to study humanities and other subjects.
What kind of challenge you meet when you teaching students in international department?
I think the?big challenge for any student that joins an international department is uh, the realization of how much English?he's getting used.Obviously as?a foreign teacher, you know, my job is to teach everything in English?and help develop the students'? of English. Um, and so the big balance with a lot of these subjects is uh, you're not just teaching the subject, you're teaching the language. And I think for any student that decides to join in the international part to part me, you know, It's?important to understand is that extra study that they have to do. Um, and it?can be a big challenge, because you know we get a range of students. And some students may find some of this language easier to pick up. And some students might, you know, find it not so easy.
It's very impressive when you're talking about the students. In the end, can you give your students some advice?
Jason:?
I obviously think, you know, the main thing is that students find a subject that makes them happy. Um, I know that I found subjects myself to the felt made me happy. Um, you may not find that subject in the first year of your university. You know, it might take until the second year or even the third year for some students where you find what type of subject really makes you happy. But I think It's?important to find that because, you know, I think it's very important not to just think this is just for a job.
I think, you know,It's?you that's doing everything. And if you find something that makes you happy, like I did when I did my university, it becomes so much easier to study because it doesn't become study anymore. It becomes?part of you.
