“Poetry is what gets lost in translation.” This quote by Robert Frost is deeply understood by Pudong campus high school Spanish teacher, Josep Capilla. In December 2018, after three years of research into the life, mind, and work of the modern poet Wallace Stevens, Capilla published a translation of 101 of his poems, titled "Estructures en la Boira".The book translates Stevens’ work from English into Catalan, and in doing so, bringing one of America’s best, but lesser known, poets to Catalonia.
Wallace Stevens was born in 1879 in Pennsylvania, studied at Harvard University, worked shortly as a journalist in New York City, went to law school, and settled in Connecticut. All his life Stevens produced poetry and published several books, and during the 1930s, would often vacation to the Florida Keys where he crossed paths with the likes of Ernest Hemmingway and Robert Frost.
Capilla’s process required him to translate not simply words, but ideas, emotions, and sentiments. To accomplish such a monumental task, he painstakingly examined all aspects of Stevens’ life, searching for anything that might help him better understand the poet’s motivations and thought-processes. Even then, recreating the poems was no easy task. Stevens’ rich vocabulary and complex writing style makes his work daunting to even the most seasoned scholars. Capilla’s translation reflects a passion for literature and poetry, a passion he also brings to his teaching at SAS. This summer Capilla plans to visit bookstores throughout Catalonia to discuss his translation, as well as other literature and poetry.
