SACHA是一位爛漫而又有才情的教師,在與其交流過程中,他一直強調兩點:1?藝術源于生活,高于生活,而純藝教學就是可以讓學生從生活中發現美,并把美的事物映在紙上,傳遞個人世界觀、價值觀,人生觀。2?無積淀,不藝術,沒有積淀,教師可以傳授學生技法讓學生模仿優秀的純藝作品,結合自己人生經歷,促進靈感迸發。

The first question is in your opinion what's your ideal art class?
第一個問題就是,在你看來,你理想中的藝術課是什么樣子的?
M
My ideal arts class? My ideal art class would be to have unlimited material, unlimited supplies and be able to do whatever I want with the students. That's not very possible though.
我理想中的藝術課?我理想中的藝術課應該是有取之不盡的素材,豐富的工具,并且我可以和學生一起做任何我想要做的事情。然而這是難以實現的。

What can they get from the art class? Can they achieve?
他們能從藝術課上得到什么?他們能夠有所收獲嗎?

Um, I think the students can achieve anything from any class but the students first must want to learn. So, I don't think it really matters if they take art or take science or take math, if the students don't want to learn they're not going to pay attention and they won't achieve anything from any class. So, the idea of my classes though is the students come here and they use their imagination and that's not something that many students get the opportunity to do in most classes. They don't have the opportunity to use their imagination. So, I hope when they come to this class, they learn something new, they're exposed to something new and they get to use their imagination and then let their imagination grow.
嗯,我認為學生們從任何課上都能有所得,但是學生首先需要學習。我認為他們上的是藝術課、科學課也好,或者上的是數學課也罷,這其實都無關緊要,如果學生不想學習,他們就無法集中精力,那么不管他們上的是什么課,他們都學不到東西。所以我上課的理念就是,讓學生在課堂上能夠發揮他們的想象力,而正是他們在大多數課上都沒有機會去做的。他們沒有機會發揮他們的想象力。所以我希望他們來上這個課的時候,能夠學到一些新的東西,他們能夠接觸到一些新的東西,他們能夠發揮他們的想象力,讓他們的創新能力得到提升。

How to set exams?

But that depends because I'm teaching them different concepts all the time. So, each concept has a different approach. For example, one project that I did with the students if you look around, we have a lot of different posters and these posters were supposed to be based off a style of art called constructivism. And you see a lot of these posters in China in the 1960's and 70's and you find them in other countries however not everybody can haveunderstood. So, having one concept and having the students understanding the conceptis one of the most challenging parts is, you can see some of the posters are very much in reference to the old school constructivism? But then a lot of them are not. So, some of the better ones, that one here, that one is the best of the back wall. That one on the corner. These are probably some of the best ones for constructivism.
考試的設置視情況而定,因為我一直以來都在教授給他們不同的概念。每個概念都有不同的方法。比如,如果你調查過的話,你會發現我有一個和學生一起完成的項目,我們做了很多不同的海報,這些海報的設計都是基于一種叫作構成主義藝術概念展開的。你可以在上世紀60年代和70年代的中國看到大量這樣的海報,你也可以在其它國家看到這種類型的海報,然后并不是每個人都能理解。因此在教授一種概念時,要讓學生理解這個概念,最具挑戰性的部分之一就是,你可以看到這些海報中有一些是非常接近老派的構成主義的。但是這些海報中絕大部分又都不是老派的構成主義。那邊的那張海報,是這面藝術墻上最優秀的一張。在角落里的那一張。這些可能是最好的構成主義作品。

Well, some of these students I've had for a few years already and I've had them for English students before I taught them art so I know their backgrounds, some of them, quite well. Not this class as much but other classes I've known the students already for two years and I can honestly say the thing that brings me the most pride and happiness is not every student is good in every subject but every student is talented. Whether that talent is for chemistry or physics or math or language, every student has a talent and I have students, we could call them perhaps, naughty students in other subject and perhaps they don't excel in most academic fields it's nice to see that when they come into an art class and can see that they can excel at something. They can do well at something. So, that part I like. To be able totake a naughty student and see them excel and grow and explore something different.
有一些學生已經在我這學習幾年了,在我給他們上藝術課之前,我教過他們英語,所以我了解他們的背景,其中有一些學生是非常優秀的。不是在這門課上,這些學生我已經教了他們兩年其它的課。老實說,最讓我覺得驕傲并且高興的并不是所有學生在每門課上都表現得很有天賦。不管這個學生的天賦是在化學專業、物理專業、數學專業或者語言專業上,每個學生都有他的天賦。我有一些學生,可能這些學生在其它課上表現得并不好,他們在大多數學術領域表現得并不出色。那么如果我看到他們來上藝術課時,能在某方面有出色的表現,這就是件好事。他們能夠在某方面有所收獲就行。這就是我所喜歡的一點。能夠讓差生沉浸到學習中,看著他們在某方面變得優秀,看著他們一路成長,能夠探索一些不一樣的東西。

How do you improve their motivation?
你是如何提升他們的自主性的呢?
M
Well, I don't think you can improve a human being’s motivationand creativity. A human being is either motivated or they're not motivated. Motivation comes from within.
我認為一個人的自主性和創新性是無法被揠苗助長的。人類就分兩種,一種自主性很強,一種毫不自覺。動力是源自內在的。

What kind of method?
你用了什么方法呢?
M
Well, once again I don't think that motivation is something that can be purely taught. Motivation is something that you have as a person. You either want to learn and grow or you simply do not want to learn and grow. So, I don't necessarily not motivate students. I try to get students excited and I hope that through certain images and techniques of art that they get excited and that that excitement is their motivation to want to do those projects. Okay.
再說一遍,我認為光靠教是無法激發一個人的動力的。動力是你自己身上本來就有的東西。要么你就是很樂于學習和成長,要么你就是單純地不想學習,也不想進步。所以我是不能推著學生前進的。我嘗試激發學生的激情,我希望能夠通過某種能激發他們熱情的藝術形象或者藝術技巧去激起他們,點燃他們心中的動力,讓他們自發地去完成這些項目。就是如此。

CFHS 高一美二 趙埈瑩,James Cho
We have taken his art classes for 4 months, and I satisfied about his class. It was full of quality content, and no pressure at all. Most of our classmates seemed release their stress with it.
First, I would like to say that there were numerous difficulties in classes, difficulty of communication or improper attitude of some disobedient students, However I can proudly say that our art teacher, Sasha, is a splendid and remarkable teacher. He was enthusiastic on every classes, hardworking and well-prepared.
Furthermore, through his classes. I can improve my oral skill, and most significantly I was able to boost my self-confidence toward speaking. The classes were pretty enjoyable, there were full of interesting contents of art, such as pop art, marble art and etc…. Generally, his class style is very open and encouraging one’s creativity, which is very important capability for students under my age.
Now, it seems everything is fine. I hope he can prolong his excellence in his future endeavor. I will be glad to become his student even in next year.
CFHS高一美二 莊美鈴
Although he has been taught us for only 4 months, he has taught us a lot of amazing knowledges and skills about art which I have never experienced before.
Personality, I really would enjoy to attend his class every week. And so far, we had already done with 3 kinds of works in this semester.
First work was creating original wallet case which is made from the cartoon magazine.
Second work was drawing big poster for each group that must be related with the development of China’s technology.
Third work was marble painting, and now we are drawing poster of pop art as a last project in this semester.
His class provides us an opportunity to expose various genre of arts, let us develop our creativity, our way of thinking.
Furthermore, he clearly explains every process of the task, and always willing to provide us some tips to advice how to expand and develop our own idea onto the art work.
Every week, every classes, from every works, we gain a new innovative knowledge and new different perspective from his class.
And I’m expecting that we can acquire more knowledges and skills in next semester!

During these few months, I have learned something and gained a different prospective.
He is always makes us concentrate and curious with the work. We make a wallet in the first class, tell us how to make, and cut the picture inside, and let us make the wallet by ourselves, let us learn through practice.
The second class that I remember is the painting class. We use the color which is we like, and paint the color which is colorful or creatable. Then we make a pretty picture. I think he is a funny, friendly, attractive teacher, his class always very open, he always play music for us in the class, he also very responsible for us, he will teach us many things about art . Prepare carefully in the ppt too.
In his class always very relax and learn something interesting.
Hope in next semester can increase more funny things and drawing let us more interested in are through the class.
